Madhumati established herself with films such as Ankhen, Tower House, Shikari and Mujhe Jeene Do. Her suppleness and agility of dance, her picture at times was a significant factor for Produced Helen the woman was usually referred to as ‘Bollywood’s Queen of Dance’. Madhumati, born in the western state of Maharashtra in 1938, had started her career as a dancer in 1957 and coached hundreds of students including Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, who recalled that she was his “first and forever guru.”
Her death came as a surprise to her fans and the film industry, actors including Vindu Dara Singh and Akshay Kumar mourned her loss on social media. She was a teacher, and guide she taught me so much in such little time and I was like a kid to her we lost one of our greats who taught us to love and give blessings to all.. VD 15 January 2020 Kashmera Shah also expressed sorrow at the news. Akshay Kumar posted a rare picture with Madhumati and wrote about how her teachings continue to guide his life.
She died peacefully in her home and has left a legacy that countless dancers should be inspired by, even those who are yet to see their shadow! The cause of her death and details about her last rites are yet to be known.
With her passing, an era has ended, but not Madhumati’s dance steps and timeless smile that will continue to linger on the lips of film buffs everywhere. The world of films has lost a shining star whose light will continue to inspire new artists on the silver screen.
